Since the early 1990's when Al Gore "discovered" the Internet, it has grown into a rather hostile environment. The Internet which is a conduit for a wealth of information, can literally destroy your computer. How you ask? Well, there are a profound number of various virus, worm and Trojan Horse "infections" that are being transmitted across the Internet constantly and the number grows daily with new ones or spinoffs. These various infections can manifest themselves in a host of different way from extremely malevelant to relatively innoccuos. These can be destruction of your data, removing critical system files making your computer unbootable, nuisance email, "denial of service" attacks and more. You may not even realize that your computer is "infected".
While all personal computers (Windows, Macintosh or some form of UNIX) are potentially vulnerable, the main target are Windows based computers.
Whether you have a Windows based computer or Macintosh, you should be using several methods to protect your computer and network. Over the next few months, we will discuss some basic steps to protect yourself and your computer.
Again, whether you have a Windows based computer or a Macintosh, there are several things you should employ to protect yourself. First, an anti-virus application (not a freeware, shareware or "bargain basement Barney's" application). Second, a firewall application. Third, which is only applicable if you are using a router on a home or business network, use NAT (Network Addressing Protocol) so your machine is invisible to the Internet, but is still fully functional. These basic precautions will provide good protection and allow you to use your computer without fear. However, the anti-virus software and firewall software must be correctly configured and updated as needed or they may not provide any or even minimal safety value.
